Ever wondered how a passion for triathlon can shape your life?

Meet Jack Spence, gold medalist at the 2019 South Africa Triathlon Champs and one of our former students, now thriving on the Triathlon Team at Wingate University, North Carolina

In this informal Q&A, we had the pleasure of catching up with Jack Spence (Class of 2021). He shares his journey from school days at Clifton to competing on the international stage, and how his time here ignited a passion that still burns bright today.

Enjoy a peek into his world and the incredible journey he’s embarked on so far!

How did you end up where you are now?

My passion for triathlon started years ago, and I quickly realized that reaching the level I aspired to required significant time and dedication. My goal was to compete internationally against athletes from around the world, with the hope of one day representing South Africa at the Commonwealth and Olympic Games. I also wanted to pursue a degree while following my passion, which led me to study in the United States.

I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunities and experiences Clifton has given me and for those I’m now enjoying while studying abroad.

What are some of the good/fond memories you forged during your time while still a schoolboy at Clifton?

I have fond memories of Clifton, especially the Clifton Challenge, where I could race my friends in a fun and supportive environment. They always cheered on my abilities and achievements with enthusiasm.

The encouragement from my teachers was also invaluable, and I truly believe no other school would have been as supportive, no matter the path its boys choose to follow.

What did you take away with you from Clifton: lessons, skills, friendships etc.?

I learned that being a gentleman in the outside world involves presenting yourself with pride and confidence, which can take you far in life.

This aligns with my personal ethos of taking pride in oneself and one’s actions while also acknowledging and uplifting those around you.

What advice would you share with yourself as a schoolboy knowing what you know now?

Don’t get too caught up in what’s to come or in hoping for a better tomorrow. Instead, be present in the moment and grateful for the opportunities around you

What is your message to other Clifton Boys to inspire them to contribute or get involved in an Old Boys’ Association.

Returning to Clifton was a great idea, thanks to my friend and classmate Mickele. The experience gave me perspective on how far I’ve come and reminded me of the privilege of attending a school like Clifton.

Any Last Thoughts?

Studying abroad was the best decision I ever made. The opportunity is available to those excelling in academics or sports. I highly recommend researching or speaking with someone who has studied abroad, as it’s an incredible experience that can open many doors

Thank you, Jack, for sharing your valuable insights with us. Your journey is incredibly inspiring and highlights that success is about more than just reaching a goal—it’s about appreciating every step along the way.

Whether you’re at the start of your path or well into it, remember Jack’s advice: stay curious, stay determined, and keep learning.

Here’s to embracing new adventures ahead!
