When the idea of creating a scholarship funding model for boys based on financial need was mooted, the founding parents were very clear on what they hoped to achieve.
The vision behind these scholarships was that they would be transformational.
They would help transform the lives of deserving young beneficiaries, and their families. And they would help shift the existing Clifton Prep demographic by providing access to a Clifton experience for boys from previously disadvantaged backgrounds
Through the generosity of members of the Clifton community, there are now two young boys attending Clifton Prep, funded in full from external donations.
These young boys have shown themselves to be deserving, hard-working recipients of this support and have, in turn, added great value to the lives and experiences of their fellow Clifton Prep pupils.
It is now time, we believe, to recognise the founding vision of these parents, while also clearly outlining the purpose of this financial support.
The renaming of the existing foundation scholarship as the Ubuntu Bursary Fund will identify this appeal as one of the niche initiatives that fall within the scope of the Clifton Foundation Trust while also giving it its own identity.
This uniquely South African term “Ubuntu” means “humanity” and is often loosely translated as “I am because you (we) are” and “humanity towards others”.
It is a simple and widely recognised concept conveying a clear message and connotation.
The spirit of Ubuntu, of a community coming together to uplift individuals, aligns strongly with the vision of what we hope to achieve at Clifton through this initiative.
This is a transformation bursary, awarded to a previously disadvantaged pupil based on financial need, and is made possible (funded) entirely through the generosity of the Clifton community.
The wonderful thing is that we can each be a part of this spirit of Ubuntu at Clifton by contributing to the Ubuntu Bursary Fund.
