Earlier this quarter we had the distinct privilege of meeting recent Clifton alumnus, Nicholas Tutt at our Business Breakfast.
Nicholas (College2015), has recently moved back to Durban after successfully completing a Masters’ degree in Mechanical Engineering at Stellenbosch University.
This chance meeting gave us a fantastic idea: why not start a regular blog post featuring some of our Clifton Old Boys and what they are up to? Not only are we excited about showcasing the amazing young (and perhaps more seasoned!) alumni that Clifton has, and continues to produce over the years; but we also see this as an opportunity to (re)connect and strengthen the Clifton Old Boys’ network.
I’m Nicholas Tutt, better known during my school days as Tutt. I joined Clifton College at the end of grade 8 in 2011 and matriculated in 2015.
After school I moved to Stellenbosch to study a Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering which I then furthered to a Masters.
I recently moved back home to Durban after completing my studies at Stellenbosch University, to start developing an Engineering business.
I am a recently graduated Mechanical Engineer, I studied at Stellenbosch University for 6 years completing both my undergraduate and postgraduate degrees.
Currently, I am busy building and developing not only my own business but also helping in my Parents’ businesses. At present we have three main businesses:
first is our business consultant branch – 2aT Business Consultants – focussing on helping small to medium businesses with their strategic finance and growth planning,
second is our custom furniture design and picture framing business – RNDM Creations – which has had many successful projects working with Clifton and its art students in the past few years,
last is the business I am building – RNDM HLDNGS. In my capacity as an engineer, I plan to contract out my services to small companies helping them design and produce new and exciting products for their business.
While at Clifton I had many great times, the most memorable for me being the friendships forged during the break times, because being honest I was never a star athlete of any sort and I enjoyed the camaraderie forged on the field during all my ‘F’ team games.
While at Clifton, I had the privilege of attending and completing a Toastmasters course which provided me with the confidence and skill to present complex topics with ease. This I’d say is probably one of the best extra-curricular courses that one can participate in during their time at school.
My biggest takeaway from Clifton was the characteristic to be humble in my successes and pursuits
I attribute my successes to my ability to face challenges as learning experiences and with the positivity that every challenge can turn into a great success.
The power of networking. Throughout my University Career I found that one of the best ways to promote yourself, and others around you was to make contacts with a variety of people in multiple sectors of life/industries. Through this one is always able to find support and guidance in all facets of life.
The last time I stepped onto Clifton Property was the day I collected my Matric certificate!
After recently attending the Clifton Business Breakfast, I realised the power of knowing and connecting with my Alma Mater.
So, for all Clifton Old Boys I’d recommend stepping back to where we were moulded into gentlemen and seeing where each of us is able to build up and support each other.
It was great (re)connecting with you, Nick!
We wish you all the best for this next chapter of your life and look forward to having you as a valued member of our Clifton Old Boys’ Association.
